INTERVIEW WITH QUINTET ATTACCA MEMBERS:

This reviewer had the opportunity to speak with Erica Anderson, Oboist, and Jeremiah Frederick, French Horn player of Quintet Attacca, in-between performances with the Chicago Philharmonic for the Joffrey Ballet. We spoke about Quintet Attacca, their affiliation with the Music Institute of Chicago and the selections for the upcoming Día de los Muertos concert. The remarks of these exceptionally busy, erudite and affable performers are paraphrased below.

Anderson: “Quintet Attacca was founded in 1999. We still have the 4 original members 18 years later along with Barbara Drapcho, clarinetist, who has been with us ‘only’ 14 years. This is the first quintet I’ve truly enjoyed playing with. The horn is a great addition to the wind quintet”.

Frederick: “The Quintet has been the Artists-In-Residence with The Music Institute of Chicago for 10 years. We teach individually, give Master Classes at Middle and High Schools, participate in Outreach programs, and run a Chamber Music Camp every summer”.

Anderson: “Although I am Department Chair of the Music Institute of Chicago’s Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion Section, I only play oboe instruments professionally. In this concert, I will play oboe and English Horn”.

Frederick: “The French Horn is considered a very difficult instrument to play, but it’s a lot of fun to work around the difficulties”.

Anderson: “We put the program together based on Hispanic Heritage Month as well as the date of the event being near Halloween and Día de los Muertos.”

Frederick: “The selections are from Mexican and other Latin American composers”.

Anderson: “The last 2 movements of the del Aguila piece are very oboe-centric; I will lead the melody. It’s a spooky piece! Also, in the last movement of the D’Rivera work, the oboe takes over”.

Frederick: “In the first piece, the Marquez, the horn has a big solo moment trading off with the bassoon- and it doesn’t shy away from using a very fast horn! However, the del Aguila piece uses the entire 4-octave range of the French Horn!”

Anderson: “Attacca is the name of an approach to performance, but it also means ‘attached’ or ‘connected’. In our Quintet, we are attached to each other – (I’m married to the bassoonist) – and connected to our audience and the community.”

Frederick: “We are very excited to present this concert for Día de los Muertos in the City Winery space; it will give us the opportunity to integrate spoken commentary into our performance.”
