Perry’s On The Embarcadero Restaurant Review – San Francisco Comfort Food With A View

Spread the love
In the beautiful city of San Francisco, it is impossible not to be impacted by the breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the bay and coast, and countless outdoor parks. When you need to grab a bite to eat in San Francisco, it is almost a crime to not dine where you have a view, inside or outside.  What better way is there to enjoy these beautiful views than to pair them with excellent food, or a glass of wine?
Entrance to Hotel Griffon and Perry’s
Here is one excellent suggestion: Perry’s on the popular waterfront of the Embarcadero. It is a restaurant that focuses on American Comfort Food that offers a lovely view off the bay and The Oakland Bridge. Nestled in the small, yet fantastic Hotel Griffin located in the Financial District, Perry’s should be on your dining to do list when visiting San Francisco. Not only is it a convenient and wonderful dining spot for hotel guests, but it is also a favorite hang out joint for local folk every day of the week. The original location attracts multiple generations of Perry’s customers, making themselves at home at the cozy neighborhood bar and restaurant, to enjoy terrific American food, a well-made drink and friendly conversation.
Hotel Griffon Lobby
My father and I stayed at the Hotel Griffon during our trip to San Francisco, and Perry’s was our go to choice for everything from breakfast to lunch to dinner. You can enter Perry’s through the front lobby of the hotel, through the back, or take an elevator down if you are a hotel guest. When you enter thr restaurant, you encounter a casual yet sleek and elegant dining area complete with a bar, and tables and booths with checkered blue and white table cloths, tiled floor panels, wood-paneled memorabilia clad walls, and endless amounts of bread sticks to munch on while waiting for your meal. On the walls, you can encounter murals of famous people such as movie stars and President John F. Kennedy grinning back at you.

Perry’s, founded by Perry Butler, has been an institution in San Francisco for 50 years now. Its first location was Union Street, which is the prime establishment today. Perry’s on Magnolia opened in Larkspur in 2015, in the historic Lark Creek Inn space. Perry’s on the Embarcadero opened in 2008, and is the perfect place for a business lunch, to meet after work for drinks, enjoy dinner with friends and family, or dig into brunch on the weekends. The restaurant is also conveniently located, being less than a mile from AT&T Park, making it a popular stop before and after Giants games.

Perry’s signature dishes include traditional Cobb Salad, Tomato Bisque, a selection of Prime Steaks, and of course, the renowned Hamburger. Perry’s also serves a fantastic weekend brunch, both Saturday and Sunday, with offerings such as Eggs Benedict, Corned Beef Hash, French Toast, and a variety of classic egg dishes.
When my father and I had dinner at Perry’s, we were seated at a table that looks out onto the San Francisco Bay and the Oakland Bridge. It was the perfect view while we ate delicious  food and drank white wine. Of course, before you even order your meal, you must eat a couple of Perry’s addictive long, thin and crispy bread sticks, that are great you when you arrive at your table! You can also eat outside on their beautiful patio along the Embarcadero.
Perry’s on the Embarcadero offers excellent service, and the staff makes you feel comfortable, at ease, and just like family, which is important considering the theme of the restaurant. Our starters consisted of potato skins with white cheddar, scallions, bacon, and spicy ranch. I am a vegetarian, and our server was more than happy to omit the bacon when I requested it. We also shared crispy onion strings, which were new to me; being from the Midwest, I am used to onion rings. The onion strings were delicious and not greasy like most fried food.

Our entrees were hearty and very generous portion sizes. My father indulged in a classic pot roast dish with mashed potatoes and side of grilled cauliflower, while I savored Perry’s house made veggie burger made out of barley, oats, caramelized onions, mushrooms, olives, raisins, and garbanzo beans. which had a tower of various toppings (cheese, avocado, lettuce and tomato on a whole wheat bun). The burger ingredients may sound overwhelming, but it was quite tasty. My veggie burger also came with a side of grilled multicolored cauliflower, which was cooked very nicely, considering that it is such an underappreciated vegetable.

After dinner, my father and I had another glass of wine and we sat outside on the lovely patio. Darkness had fallen, and there were lights decorated around the fence. It was beautiful and relaxing. As I sipped my wine and took in everything around me, I realized that Perry’s on the Embarcadero is an excellent choice when traveling to San Francisco,  and you  just need some good old classic American comfort food and great service.
